The Wheeler Geologic Area was featured in Thursday’s Out There section. Here’s a link
This area used to be a national monument, but it’s so tough to get to - a 14- mile drive in on a rough 4-wheel-drive road or a 7-mile hike - few people visit it. I backpacked to it last month, and put together a slide show here
It’s about 4 hours drive from Colorado Springs, and well worth the trip. You will find few places in Colorado with such beauty and solitude.
What do you think are a motorcycle’s chances of making it on the 4-wheel access trail? Not a harley-esque cycle, mind out, but more of a sport-touring number?
That’s obviously just Palmer Park and a green screen.
At least a few of the pines in Colorado haven’t been eaten.
Never been to Wheeler - though I think about backpacking the La Garita often. Just haven’t gotten around to it yet - so many great mountain ranges between here and there. :0)
Been to Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in New Mexico though which is exactly the same thing, but with pinon and ponderosa pine.
Kate,
Your motorcycle could probably make it, as long as you take it slow. The Forest Service warns it takes longer to drive to Wheeler than to hike in.
In which case I would guess a sport touring model wouldn’t make it so well. An enduro sure. Contact the USFS office in the region and get their spin. Roads like that can go from passable to disaster in a monsoonal storm and I hear the road to Wheeler is harsh on a good day.
